About

Arthon Industries is developing their site and surrounding area - helping out on Kelowna’s new and vital SPR Service Perimeter Road - which will bring new access to the quarry site.

The project here relocates the scales and admin office to engage the public with a retail and information building offering landscape products, sales, events and more.

A museum is contemplated for the final Phase II of construction.

The building floor plan - provided by the client/Arthron - is a triangle separating the quarry scales and service trucks from the public retail area visible from this new SPR.

A rock like theme seemed to be an effective design motif and is integrated into the design.

The prominent corner, as public and service vehicles approach, is shaped as a mountain with wood finish ‘trees’ - a sort of mountain landscape - from which materials are collected/mined.

Shading the outside areas with a large canopy with rock shaped holes casting shadows of the same was considered for the retail/museum space but was left behind for now as the focus is on the scales proper with offices. The retail triangle in the centre is Phase II.

The results will be a public interface with the quarry activity and ways to get close to the industry in an informative fun way.

This to present mining as more palatable everyday industry.
